What to Check Before You Book a Day at Dollywood

The park led every brand at the 2026 Golden Ticket Awards. Even so, a day there can go sideways in ways you can plan around.

The park has logged 31 total complaints over three years with the Better Business Bureau.

Here is what those complaints actually show, and to know about each before you visit...

1. Rides Close When It Gets Cold

Dollywood publishes temperature thresholds for every ride.

By its own guidelines, Lightning Rod shuts down at 34 degrees, FireChaser Express at 39, while Mystery Mine, which closes at 34, and Lemon Twist, which closes at 32, won't reopen until temperatures reach 40.

Check the forecast before a cool-weather visit.

2. Lightning Shuts Down Big Chunks of the Park

Dollywood's weather guidelines state that safety specialists watch the radar for lightning.

When a strike lands within 10 miles, more than two dozen rides suspend at once, including every major coaster. They resume only after 15 minutes with no strikes.

3. Rides Break Down With No Warning

According to the BBB complaint record, one guest waited about 90 minutes for Lightning Rod before it broke down, then waited 20 more, with riders walked off the track.

4. Closures Aren't Always Communicated

During one August visit, the same BBB complainant reported that employees stood in the Daredevil Falls queue but did not tell guests the ride was closed for maintenance.

That guest spent a full day and could not ride a single attraction!

5. Refunds for Weather Washouts Are Hard to Get

One guest bought three two-park tickets and preferred parking for $411.

Dollywood declined to refund used admission and offered complimentary 2026 tickets instead, which they turned down given an eight-hour round trip from Nashville.

6. New Rides Open With Early Hiccups

Barton reports that NightFlight Expedition, Dollywood's thrill ride that debuted in August 2026, sat closed for nearly a week soon after opening. If a ride is your reason for going, don't build the trip around its first weeks.

7. Splash Country Sections Can Be Closed Without Notice

A family from North Carolina with a two-year-old found the kid section shut down for short-staffing. They were not told at purchase or check-in, and left after about two hours.

8. The Terrain Is Steep

One Facebook user called the park very hilly, with steep climbs up to Thunderhead. Turning right at the gate means an uphill climb; left is gentler.

For those with limited mobility, the park rents wheelchairs and ECVs, and ECVs can be reserved online in advance, though everything else is rented on arrival.

9. Parking and the Walk to the Gate

General parking runs $25 per vehicle. Lots A through E include tram service; a Facebook user she cited said the trams are handy in any lot and worth parking near.

Lot F sits close to the main gate but has no tram. Barton also notes a $3 Patriot Park trolley runs from Pigeon Forge.
