When it comes to cruise ship cabins, there are certain things that could cause issues, compromise safety, and, in some cases, even get you kicked off the ship!
Whether you’re staying in an inside cabin, an ocean view, or a balcony suite, it’s important to follow some basic guidelines to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
In this video, Ilana from Life Well Cruised shares her tips on the most important dos and don’ts for your cruise ship cabin. Here's the video and the 20 things you should never do while staying in your cabin detailed below:
1. Don’t Take Drinks or Food from the Mini Bar
While it might seem tempting to grab a drink from the mini bar, keep in mind that these items are not included in your beverage package. Items like bottled water and soda can result in unexpected charges. To avoid this, simply ask your cabin attendant to remove the mini bar items if you'd prefer not to be tempted.

2. No Smoking in the Cabin
Smoking inside your cabin is strictly prohibited on all cruise ships. This includes smoking anything, even substances that may be legal in your home state. Smoking in the cabin could result in serious penalties, including being kicked off the ship.
3. No Smoking on the Balcony
Cruise lines have strict no-smoking policies on balconies, largely due to safety concerns. Most popular cruise lines do not allow smoking on the balcony, although there are a few exceptions with European cruise lines. Additionally, vaping is treated the same as smoking and is also prohibited.

4. Don’t Damage Your Cabin
It’s essential to respect your cabin and its furnishings. Avoid using items like over-the-door organizers if they might damage the walls or bathroom door. Also, never use tape to attach decorations to the walls, as this can damage the surface. Stick to magnets or command hooks for hanging things.
5. Don’t Take Items from the Cabin
While it might be tempting to take home that plush bathrobe, pool towel, or binoculars, most cruise lines charge for any items taken from the cabin. The exception? Gifts like tote bags or slippers that are specifically provided for you to keep.
6. Don’t Open Your Balcony Door While Opening Your Cabin Door
Opening both the balcony and front doors at the same time can create a dangerous wind tunnel that may cause objects to fly around the cabin. Additionally, a serious injury could occur if the front door slams shut. Always open doors with caution, particularly if you have a cabin with a traditional door rather than a sliding one.

7. Don’t Sit on the Balcony Railings
It might seem like a harmless act, but sitting on the balcony railing is dangerous. This is something that should be discouraged, especially with children, to avoid any accidents.
8. Keep Your Balcony Door Locked
For added safety, always keep the balcony door locked when you're not around. This is especially important if you have young children, as there’s usually a safety lock at the top of the door.

9. Be Nice to Your Cabin Attendant
Cruise cabin attendants work incredibly hard to ensure you have a comfortable stay. Always be polite and respectful—your attitude can make a big difference in how well your cruise experience goes.
10. Don’t Leave a Huge Mess
While you don’t have to tidy up after yourself, leaving a huge mess can be problematic. Some cruise attendants may even refuse to clean the cabin until you’ve picked up your things.
11. Put Out Your Do-Not-Disturb Sign
To avoid any interruptions, remember to put out the “Do Not Disturb” sign when you don’t want anyone entering your cabin. This includes your cabin attendant, who may need to drop off information or notices.
12. Put Out Your Make Up Room Sign
In addition to the “Do Not Disturb” sign, don’t forget to put out the "Make Up Room" sign if you want your cabin cleaned. If you forget, your cabin may not be cleaned during the day.

13. Don’t Remove Automatic Gratuities
Gratuities are typically included in your cruise package, and they go toward your cabin attendant’s income. Removing them is not only inconsiderate but could also cause tension with staff.
14. Don’t Bring Prohibited Items
Irons, steamers, and extension cords are prohibited on cruise ships due to fire risks. Don’t attempt to sneak these items onboard, as they will likely be confiscated. If you need an extension cord for medical reasons, ask the cruise line in advance.
15. Don’t Bring CBD Gummies
Due to federal law, CBD gummies or other cannabis-related products are not allowed on cruise ships, even if they are legal in your home state. Carrying these items could result in serious consequences, including being removed from the ship.

16. Don’t Forget to Store Valuables Safely
Always use the cabin safe to store valuables such as passports, jewelry, and money. It’s also a good idea to store important prescription medications in the safe to prevent them from being misplaced.
17. Never Use Open Flames in the Cabin
Candles and incense are not allowed on cruise ships, as they pose a fire hazard. Open flames, in any form, are strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
18. Don’t Flush Anything Except Toilet Paper
Cruise ship toilets are very different from those in hotels, and flushing anything other than toilet paper can lead to serious plumbing issues. Don't flush wipes, feminine hygiene products, or anything else that might cause a blockage.
19. Don’t Slam the Cabin Door
Cruise ship cabin doors are heavy, and slamming them can be disruptive to other passengers. Always be mindful of the noise, especially late at night or early in the morning.

20. Don’t Leave Children Unattended
Leaving children unsupervised in a cruise cabin, especially while you’re on the balcony, is a huge safety risk. One case involved a child being removed by the cabin attendant when parents left them unattended, leading to unnecessary panic.
By keeping these 20 essential guidelines in mind, you can avoid potential issues, ensure your safety, and help maintain a peaceful environment for everyone on board.
